The trek to Everest Base Camp is the most famous walk in the Himalaya. From the airstrip at Lukla you follow the Dudh Koshi into Sagarmatha National Park, climb to the Sherpa trading town of Namche Bazaar, pass the monastery at Tengboche and cross the high yak pastures to Gorak Shep and the edge of the Khumbu Glacier at 5,364 metres.

Plan on it. Nepal has required foreign trekkers in its national parks to hire a licensed guide since 2023, and from 2025 the rule is being applied in the Everest region too. Rules and enforcement change, so check with the Nepal Tourism Board before you go. Our trek guide explains permits and guides in detail.
Physically it is a long hike rather than a climb: typically 5–8 hours of walking a day on good but steep trails. The real challenge is altitude — you sleep above 4,000 m for five or six nights. Reasonable fitness, a slow ascent and proper acclimatisation matter far more than athletic ability.
