Prayer flags and cairns on Kala Patthar with the pyramid of Pumori behind

Kala Patthar

The best view of Everest on the trek

Kala Patthar — "black rock" in Nepali — is a dark, rounded shoulder on the south ridge of Pumori, rising above the sandy lake bed of Gorak Shep to about 5,644 m. It is the highest point of the standard trek and the finest viewpoint for Everest in Nepal: from the prayer flags on top, the mountain’s black summit pyramid rises directly across the Khumbu Glacier.

The climb from Gorak Shep takes around 1.5–2 hours, steep and relentless in the thin air. Most trekkers go before dawn to watch the first sun strike the summit; in stable autumn weather, late afternoon is a quieter and warmer alternative.

What to do at Kala Patthar

Sunrise over Everest

Leave Gorak Shep around 4.30–5 am with a headlamp, down jacket and hot drink. The sun rises behind Everest, so the summit glows while the valley is still in shadow.

Take in the full panorama

From the top you see Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse Shar, Changtse on the Tibetan side, Pumori directly above you and the length of the Khumbu Glacier and Icefall below.

Or go at sunset

In calm autumn weather, a late-afternoon ascent often gives warm light on Everest and Nuptse — and a warmer climb. Carry a headlamp for the descent.

Getting to Kala Patthar

  • From Gorak Shep: a steep path climbs the grassy then rocky slope directly behind the lodges; 1.5–2 hours up, about 1 hour down.
  • By helicopter: most Everest heli tours land briefly on a flat area below Kala Patthar for photos.

Trekker tips

  • It is extremely cold before sunrise: wear everything, including a proper down jacket and insulated gloves.
  • You do not need to reach the very top — the view from the lower prayer-flag area is almost as good.
  • If you slept badly or have symptoms, it is fine to skip it and descend. Base Camp and Kala Patthar are not worth your health.
