Where to Stay for Everest Base Camp

A good bed in Kathmandu, a warm lodge in Namche — here is where to sleep.

You will sleep in two very different worlds on this trip. In Kathmandu, before and after the trek, you have the full range from classic trekkers’ guesthouses to five-star heritage hotels — most people base themselves in or near Thamel, the district of gear shops, agencies and restaurants.

On the trail you stay in teahouses: family-run mountain lodges. Your guide usually books them, but in Namche Bazaar and Lukla there are upgraded lodges with en-suite rooms and bookable online — worth it for the rest day, or the night before a weather-sensitive flight.

Scores below are Trip.com guest ratings out of 5 at the time of writing; lodge rates in the Khumbu swing widely by season, so every card links out to Trip.com for live availability.

Thamel, the rest of Kathmandu, or the Khumbu?

Base Good for Less good for Price level
Thamel, Kathmandu Gear shopping, meeting your agency, restaurants, budget choice Noise and traffic; can feel hectic €–€€
Lazimpat / Durbar Marg / Battisputali Heritage hotels, gardens, quiet post-trek recovery A taxi ride to Thamel’s shops €€–€€€
Namche Bazaar Acclimatisation days, en-suite lodges, bakeries Steep village — everything is uphill €–€€
Lukla Early flights, weather delays Little to do beyond the airstrip €–€€

How to choose

  • Before the trek: stay in Thamel, near your agency and the rental shops. If your Lukla flight leaves from Ramechhap, ask about hotel transfers at 1–3 am.
  • After the trek: book somewhere with a garden and a proper bath — Hotel Shanker, Yak & Yeti or Dwarika’s are the classic treats.
  • In Namche: an upgraded lodge makes the rest day genuinely restful; your guide can usually arrange it.
  • In Lukla: stay close to the airstrip if you are flying out early, and keep your buffer day.

Teahouse tips

  • Rooms higher up are basic: twin beds, a blanket and thin walls. Bring your own sleeping bag.
  • Lodges make their money on food, so eat where you sleep; some charge more for a room if you do not.
  • Hot showers, charging and Wi-Fi usually cost extra and get pricier with altitude.
  • In October and April, lodges in Lobuche and Gorak Shep fill up — another reason to trek with a guide who books ahead.

Where to stay: FAQs

Where should I stay in Kathmandu before the Everest trek?

Thamel is the most practical: agencies, rental and gear shops, restaurants and a short drive to the domestic terminal. Stay in a quieter lane or at the edge of the district for better sleep.

Do I need to book teahouses on the Everest Base Camp trek?

Your guide normally books them. In peak season, lodges in Lobuche and Gorak Shep fill up, so booking ahead — which a good agency does — matters.

Can I stay at Hotel Everest View?

Yes. It sits at about 3,880 m above Namche, so sleeping there early in the trek can be a big altitude jump — many trekkers visit for tea or breakfast on their Namche rest day instead.

Are there hotels with private bathrooms on the trek?

In Lukla, Phakding, Namche and a few higher villages, yes. Above Dingboche most rooms share toilets, and running water can freeze at night.

Can I leave luggage in Kathmandu?

Almost every Kathmandu hotel offers free luggage storage for guests who return after the trek — useful given the Lukla baggage limit.
